What happened? This accident closed Interstate 64 in Henrico for several hours

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A tractor-trailer driver has been charged after his truck struck a sign on Interstate 64 west near Interstate 295 in eastern Henrico County early Thursday morning. The crash snarled traffic for more than seven hours and caused miles of backed-up traffic on the busy interstate.

Dramatic image captured by a VDOT camera showed a wrecked semi-trailer truck leaning against a road sign.

According to VDOT officials, traffic at Exit 205 was rerouted and there was a 6-mile traffic jam as of 2 p.m.

Drivers were “encouraged to seek alternate routes to avoid significant delays” until the left lane of the interstate reopened at approximately 4:45 p.m.

Ian Foster was among those driving past the scene of the crash on Thursday morning, which caused traffic jams stretching for miles.

“I just saw an accident. Terrible damage to the sign,” Foster said. “It’s been years since I’ve seen a traffic jam that far back, hasn’t it?”

The truck was traveling west when its raised frame struck a road sign at mile marker 200, approaching the I-64 and I-295 fork.

Virginia State Police said the crash happened shortly after 9:30 a.m.

“The cab continued on and then came to a stop, apparently because it separated from the bed of the semi-trailer,” said Matt Demlein, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police. “We are still investigating what led to the sign being struck. It was empty at the time.”

Police do not know why the bed was raised or how long it was raised before the crash. However, officials said the truck stopped at a weigh station about a mile earlier that is equipped with cameras.

According to the officers, no one was injured and the driver, a 62-year-old man, was issued a ticket for dangerous driving.

At approximately 11 a.m., the renovation crew managed to remove the bed from the sign, allowing the hours-long cleaning process to begin.

Westbound traffic remained closed for several hours after the crash, so drivers stuck in the crash were told to turn around and use a section of the highway to head east.

Farther east on I-64, police set up a roadblock to redirect traffic off the Bottoms Bridge exit, causing a traffic jam that at one point stretched for six miles.

Foster, who was driving in the opposite direction on his way home to North Carolina, said it was great that no one was hurt. He works in the construction industry and said he has seen similar situations with other large trucks and that there should be precautions in place to prevent them.

“Sometimes you look ahead and go out,” Foster said. “I mean, it could happen to any of us, right? So you just have to be careful.”
