Panathinaikos were hoping to sign Inter Milan striker Joaquin Correa, but sources report that the transfer fell through.

The 30-year-old is currently the Nerazzurri’s fifth-choice striker, ahead of him in the order of precedence are Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, Mehdi Taremi and Marko Arnautovic.

That’s why Simone Inzaghi believes his former Lazio pupil is expendable. The coach has also left him off his Champions League list.

Over the past few days, Panathinaikos emerged as a possible destination for the Argentine. At one point, many believed a deal would see the light of day.

But according to Sport Mediaset via FcInter NewsTalks between the parties broke down.

As the source explains, Panathinaikos had hoped to sign Correa before submitting its UEFA Conference League squad, a deadline that passed yesterday.

So while Greek clubs can continue to sign new players until September 11, the Athenians will not be able to put Correa on their European list.

Nevertheless, the source believes that a move away is still possible, as several Turkish clubs have made enquiries about the former Sevilla and Sampdoria player.

Correa’s contract with the Italian champions expires in June 2025.

The question remains whether he will honour his contract in the coming days or find himself a new home, although his options are currently limited due to the closed transfer window in most countries.

The Argentine international signed for the Nerazzurri in the summer of 2021 after spending two disappointing campaigns at Appiano Gentile before a forgettable loan spell at Marseille before returning to Inzaghi’s side in the summer.
