Four people were taken to hospital after an SUV ran a red light and hit a school bus in Johnsburg in Ringwood on Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry Township Fire Protection District and Spring Grove Fire Protection District responded at approximately 3:20 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of Route 31 and Ringwood Road in Ringwood.

Lt. Porfirio Campos-Cruz with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said multiple people reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the two-vehicle collision.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a black 2008 Saturn Outlook with four people inside and a Johnsburg Community School District 12 bus with three people inside.

The initial investigation showed the Saturn was traveling south on Route 31, approaching a traffic light at Ringwood Road, Campos-Cruz said.

Campos-Cruz said the driver of the Saturn stated he did not see the light turn red.

The driver of the Saturn attempted to brake but was unable to avoid a collision with the school bus, which was traveling west on Ringwood Road.

All four occupants of the Saturn were taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry, Campos-Cruz said.

Two students and the bus driver did not require transport to the hospital. The students were picked up from the scene by parents or guardians.

Campos-Cruz said the Saturn sustained significant front-end damage and was towed from the scene. The school bus did not require towing.

The driver of the Saturn was issued a ticket for disregarding traffic lights, driving excessively fast for prevailing conditions and driving an uninsured vehicle.

Johnsburg Community School District 12 said in a letter to parents that the bus was transporting students home from Johnsburg Junior High School.

District officials said no students were “seriously injured,” and the driver also reported no injuries.

“The school district is working directly with affected families to address any concerns,” the district said.

The crash had a minor impact on afternoon bus routes from Ringwood School Primary Centre and is likely to have delayed pupil drop-off times.
