Georgia school shooting details

Calls about the shooting at Apalachee High School began coming in to law enforcement around 10:20 a.m., Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said Wednesday morning.

The victims were: Mason Schermerhorn (14 years old), Christian Angulo (14 years old), Richard Aspinwall (39 years old) and Christina Irimie (53 years old).

The suspected shooter, a 14-year-old student, was arrested and charged with murder, according to the GBI. Authorities said he will be prosecuted as an adult.

All schools in Barrow County were closed as a “precautionary measure” Wednesday morning around 11:30 a.m. ET, the sheriff’s office said.

Barrow County Schools Superintendent Dallas LeDuff said late Wednesday afternoon that schools will be closed through the end of the week and that crisis counseling will be available.

Apalachee is one of two high schools in the Barrow County School System. It has about 1,900 students in a rural town of 18,300 residents. Winder is about 30 miles from Athens, Georgia.

Wednesday’s mass killing is the 604th mass killing in the U.S. since 2006 in which at least four people are killed, according to a database from USA TODAY, the Associated Press and Northeastern University. The database tracked 3,120 mass killing fatalities in the United States over an 18-year period.

A community in mourning

Georgian authorities continue to monitor the situation.

“I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School, and I call on all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of students in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” Gov. Brian Kemp said Wednesday.

“Leigh Ann and I are praying for the victims, their families and all the students at Apalachee High School in Barrow County,” U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, who represents Barrow County, Georgia, where the school is located, said in a statement. “We are grateful to law enforcement for their quick action to secure the school and arrest the shooter.”

On Wednesday evening, Winder residents gathered for a vigil to honour the victims.

“Love will triumph over what happened today,” said County Commissioner Alex Ward.
