The federal government has unveiled plans to build a supergrid that would end the country’s ongoing power outages.

Bolaji Tunji, media advisor to Energy Minister Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this in a statement issued on the sidelines of the China-Africa Cooperation Summit.

Adelabu, who was speaking in China, condemned the country’s electricity grid, saying its current state does not match the vision for the energy sector.

“If we look at the strength, capacity and age of our current network within the national grid, it cannot fully support our vision for the power sector, hence the need to build the Western and Eastern Supergrids.

“While we have been working on this since I returned to office, I can also tell you that the president fully supports this decision because it will improve our transmission network, stabilize the grid, and increase the capacity and flexibility of the national grid,” he said.

According to him, 90 percent of the required approvals have already been issued and will be obtained soon.

Former Energy Minister Barth Nnaji has advocated the creation of a supergrid to end the country’s ongoing power grid collapse.
