By the time you get married, you should really know your partner. After all, you both plan to spend the rest of your lives together.

Reddit user Substantial_Chair588 adored her husband. She loved him deeply and believed she had an accurate picture of his values, goals, and how he dealt with challenges.

But one day something happened that shook her to her core, making her doubt everything she thought she knew about him.

As she explained on the r/AITAH subreddit, the man pulled out a gun and aimed it directly at her pregnant belly.

The incident could have ended in a disaster

There are at least 49 million households with firearms in the United States, and 21 states have safe-storage laws under which a homeowner can be punished for having an unsecured firearm in the home or for allowing an unauthorized person to access one.

In 2021, 48,830 people died from gunshot wounds in the country.

(That amounts to 14.6 gunshot deaths per 100,000 people — the highest rate since the early 1990s, but still lower than the 1974 peak of 16.3 gunshot deaths per 100,000 people.)

Though they tend to get less public attention, gun-related suicides have long made up the majority of that number. In 2021, 54% of all gun-related deaths in the U.S. were suicides (26,328), while 43% were murders (20,958).

However, even if we believe the woman’s husband and assume that he “wasn’t thinking,” the whole situation still wouldn’t be any less serious.

In the same year, 549 firearm deaths were accidental, and 537 involved law enforcement officers.

Around three in 100 people will experience an episode of psychosis in their lifetime. When the first episode happens, it is often very frightening, confusing and distressing, particularly because it is such an unfamiliar experience.

If this was the case this time, we hope it will never happen again.
