Nearly 50 people killed or injured in U.S. K-12 school shootings in 2024

Parents’ cars line the road near Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, following the shooting at the school on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

Gun violence has hit more than 20 schools across the country since the start of 2024, and one of the latest K-12 schools to grapple with gun-related deaths and injuries is a Georgia high school.

Four people were killed and nine others were injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, a suburb of Atlanta, early Wednesday morning. It was the 23rd time this year that a school shooting left someone injured or dead, according to data compiled by Education Week, a K-12 news organization.

Education Week is just one of many organizations that collect data on gun violence in schools. But unlike the National Gun Violence Archive or the K-12 School Shooting Database, it only tracks incidents that meet certain criteria:

  • Reported incidents involving firearm discharge

  • In the event that any person other than the suspect or perpetrator has sustained a gunshot wound as a result of the incident

  • Occurred on K-12 school grounds or on a school bus

  • It took place during school hours or at a school-sponsored event.

Taking these factors into account, there will be 38 school shootings in 2023 — 15 more than in 2024, including the shooting in Georgia on Wednesday.

Since 2018, when Education Week began tracking school shootings, there have been approximately 205 school shootings.

When and where have the other school shootings occurred this year?

Education Week’s list of school shootings reported in 2024 includes incidents that occurred in K-12 schools across the country and resulted in the death or injury of a person shot with a firearm.

While all of the reported incidents occurred at a K-12 school, not every reported school shooting has put the lives of students, teachers, or staff in danger. Some of those incidents, including those reported in New Mexico and Oregon, occurred after hours.
