The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated six traffic fatalities out of 185 crashes that occurred over the Labor Day weekend, the agency said today.

Between 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 30, and midnight on Monday, September 2, the ALEA Highway Patrol Division conducted an investigation into:

  • 6 killed in traffic accidents in Cleburne, Chilton and Mobile counties
  • 185 road accidents, in which 101 people were injured
  • 29 arrests for drunk driving
  • 227 tickets for not wearing seat belts
  • 1,688 speeding tickets
  • 15 tickets for dangerous driving

During the same period, the ALEA Maritime Patrol Department investigated:

  • 1 non-boating fatality (drowning) on ​​September 1 on Wheeler Lake
  • 1 boating incident on Lake Tuscaloosa that left two injured
  • 366 vehicle inspections
  • 6 arrests for drunk driving
  • 369 maritime safety warnings
  • 105 fines for violating safety at sea

Labor Day also marked the end of ALEA’s “101 Days of Summer Safety” initiative.

Since September 1, ALEA has recorded 32 fewer road fatalities compared to the same period in 2023.

“While we are encouraged by the decline in fatalities, there is still much work to be done,” ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said in a statement. “These tragic incidents underscore the importance of roadway and boating safety, as well as the continued need for vigilance and compliance with state laws year-round.”
