LETTERS: Readers write about Venezuelan gang unrest in Aurora
Residents of The Edge at Lowry Apartments at East 12th Avenue and Dallas Street in Aurora are speaking out against what they call widespread misinformation about their apartment complex. Some Aurora City Council members have gone on national and local television to say the complex is unsafe because it is overrun by Venezuelan gangs. Residents, police and city workers say that is not true and that a “slumdog” has made it nearly uninhabitable. PHOTO BY SUSAN GREENE, for the Sentinel

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here’s a small sampling of what Sentinel readers are saying about the growing controversy surrounding unconfirmed reports of Venezuelan “gang takeovers” in parts of Aurora.

EDITOR: Thanks for the article on “gangs/apartment complexes”. Truth and facts are hard to find. Words used to matter and you had to stick to them. Unfortunately, not anymore.

Thank you for helping me understand what’s going on outside.

Mike Dougher, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

EDITOR: Only a Bolshevik would see mere human immigrants and immediately demonize the people, shining a light on the negative impact these “people” have on American society. They don’t belong here… and frankly, neither do you. Stop calling governing with common sense “far-right politics.” But I’ll give you a fair shake… it must be hard to live with one hand constantly clutching your pearl necklace.

EDITOR: I enjoyed reading your response to Danielle Jurinsky and Mike Coffman feeding Fox News with lies and exaggerations. It’s a political stunt, yes, but I also suspect Coffman wanted revenge. He’s probably still smarting from losing his seat in Congress to Jason Crow. And Crow is the real target of this whole attempt to paint Aurora as overrun by criminal immigrants because of the nation’s immigration policies. The amplification of their misinformation by outlets like Fox News is meant to hurt Crow’s re-election campaign, but it’s hurting the very community they supposedly serve! One of my neighbors here in Denver was surprised to get a call from her daughter from out of state who was concerned about her mother living in such a dangerous place.

Thank you for criticizing Jurinsky and Coffman for this outrageous and damaging political stunt.

Susan Greenwood, former Aurora resident

EDITOR: My iPhone has been blowing up in the past few days due to out-of-town friends and family who are concerned about my safety due to Venezuelan gangs in my city. Although I have responded with some of the same points you thoughtfully made in your editorial, they believe that Mayor Mike Coffman and Governor Jared Polis are denying the “evidence” presented on Fox News stations. I am now sending them your editorial (unfortunately, to no avail).

Thank you for your fact-based reporting and insightful editorials.

EDITOR: Perry is not a “journalist”! He is a leftist who spreads propaganda that is usually full of lies and half-truths. He never, ever gathers and presents information from all the perspectives that a real journalist would try to do. Journalists seek the truth and let fate play out. In his latest column he seems to ignore the idea that there is a problem here. Yes, the story is being blown out of proportion for political purposes (which it often does), but that does not mean there are no serious problems. The idea that he claims to be a journalist is actually quite insane. Perry should stop making false claims about who he really is.

EDITOR:Thank you for speaking out against this aggressive rhetoric and disinformation.

I struggle with this in my own family. My mom’s friend’s granddaughter was attacked (and apparently kidnapped) while fulfilling a North Aurora Doordash order.

My family found out from that family and others that it was connected to Venezuelan gangs.

Whether this is the case or not is irrelevant.

The police have a duty to prevent such a situation without exposing innocent residents to danger.

The city has an obligation to provide residents of these poor neighborhoods with better wages and government benefits to reduce crime.

Doordash is responsible for ensuring the safety of its drivers and not sending them to areas where such incidents occur without paying them a premium for working in unsafe conditions.

I told my mom she needs to tell her friend to sue Doordash.

I had a tense email exchange with Danielle Jurinsky.

She is making baseless claims that will lead to both private violence and legislative violence (deportation, etc.) not only against Venezuelan citizens, but also against anyone who appears Latina.

She is an Aurora Nazi. That is what I called her in my email to her and I will stand by it.

She should be removed from power, even arrested, for trying to incite violence against her own voters.
