US gun violence and mass shootings in 2024

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The deadly school shooting in Georgia Wednesday marks the 385th mass shooting in the United States this calendar year. That’s according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non-profit data collection and research group.

GVA defines a mass shooting as an event having four or more victims, either injured or killed, not including the suspected shooter.

Keeping in mind there are roughly four months remaining in 2024, here’s how the 385 figure compares to total US mass shootings in previous calendar years.

Back to the 385 mass shootings to-date in 2024, of those, GVA reports seven happened in Minnesota. All of them happened in the Twin Cities metro area. They resulted in 25 people injured and eight people killed. Among these, the February shooting Burnsville that took the lives of three emergency responders—two with ties to southeast Minnesota.

In Iowa, there’s been one mass shooting this year in the Hawkeye State, resulting in five injuries and two deaths. This was in Perry, Iowa, when a student opened fire at the high school killing a student and an administrator in January.

When looking at all shootings for this year to-date, GVA reports 393 children have been injured by gun violence nationwide in 2024, with 173 kids losing their lives. When it comes to teens, 2,256 have been hurt in shootings this year, with 802 dying from gun violence.
