(MENAFN- IANS) Patna, September 4 (IANS) At least 10 people were injured when the balcony of a building from which they were watching the Mahaviri procession collapsed in Bihar’s Chhapra district.

A crowd gathered to watch the band perform in the procession.

The accident occurred on Tuesday at around 11:30 pm in a block of Isuapur district.

Dr Kumar Aashish, district attorney of Saran, told IANS that only 10 people were injured in the incident.

“As soon as we came to know about the incident, we sent additional forces to the spot to rescue people. 10 people sustained minor injuries and scratches in the incident and were admitted to Isuapur Community Health Centre. They were given initial treatment and discharged from the hospital,” Aashish said.

During the annual Mahaviri Mela procession in the village of Isuapur, an event was held which included a performance by an orchestra.

The accident occurred when a large number of people gathered on the balcony of the old building to watch the performances, causing the balcony to collapse under their weight.

Eyewitnesses said that a large crowd had also gathered on the ground. When the accident occurred, people standing on the balcony fell on them. As a result, they did not suffer any serious injuries. Fortunately, the debris did not fall on the people standing on the ground.

“Police were already at the spot and started rescue operation as soon as the incident occurred,” Aashish said.

Fortunately, those on the balcony fell onto those gathered below, which helped cushion their fall and prevented more serious injuries.

The incident raised concerns about safety at such large gatherings, particularly at popular social events.

The Mahaviri Mela procession is a religious event held every year in every district of Bihar.

This incident highlights the need for more stringent safety protocols at community events, especially those involving large crowds, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
