At least half a dozen people were shot during a parade celebrating Caribbean culture in New York on Labor Day.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday along the West Indian American Day parade route in the 300 block of Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, police told the New York Post.

The man was shot in the head, another in the torso, another in the arm and another in the wrist, sources told the newspaper. The woman was shot in the torso and arm. The injuries to the other victims were not immediately clear.

The victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

A general view of the annual Labor Day Parade, celebrating its 57th anniversary, in Brooklyn, New York, September 2, 2024, shows Eastern Parkway transformed into a kaleidoscope of feather-covered costumes and colorful flags as participants march down Main Street along floats filled with speakers blaring soca and reggae music

The condition of at least one of the victims is so critical that he may die, the newspaper reported.

The suspect was seen fleeing west on Eastern Parkway toward Classon Avenue. He remained at large Monday afternoon.

Police no longer treat this situation as a shooting.

Nearly one million people gathered for the 47th annual Crown Heights parade celebrating Caribbean heritage and culture.

Last week, New York Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said a “heavy police presence” was planned following incidents on the route last year in which at least two people were shot and a third victim was cut in the arm.

He added that this year law enforcement activities included security checks using 300 hand-held metal detectors.

Jelanie DeShong, a board member of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, said the goal of this year’s event is to introduce Caribbean customs to both those who are new to them and those who are already familiar with them.

“We’re just trying to create an ad for those who are already there and are new to the culture to come and enjoy it,” DeShong said, according to The New York Times.

“This weekend is a love story that we create every year for the Caribbean community and the broader Caribbean culture.”

The parade route, which is decorated in green, yellow and red, runs for nearly two miles from Rochester Avenue to the Brooklyn Museum. Some marchers wear sequins and feathers and dance to Afrobeat music.

The event began in the 1930s by Jessie Waddle, an immigrant from Trinidad, as a carnival gathering in Harlem.
