Theewaterskloof Coalition collapses: new mayor appointed

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and Good Party coalition in the Theewaterskloof municipality has collapsed just two weeks after the ousting of the African National Congress (ANC) and Patriotic Alliance (PA) coalition.

DA Mayor Lincoln de Bruyn was removed from office following a vote of no confidence, and Tienie Zimmerman of Freedom Front Plus became its new mayor.

The Freedom Front Plus sided with the ANC, PA and Good Party to oust de Bruyn, a move DA provincial leader Tertuis Simmers says was aimed at allowing further looting in the commune.

“This comes after Mayor de Bruyn took action to stop the misuse of disaster management funds. Shortly after taking office, he discovered significant irregularities in the distribution of funds. Chairman John Michels of the Good Party publicly criticised de Bruyn and the DA when he failed to secure R150 000 for travel expenses for students on a rugby tour abroad.”
