Neuse River Drownings | New warning signs after four drownings on the Neuse River in recent months

WAKE COUNTY, North Carolina (WTVD) — Wake County is taking new steps to protect swimmers and boaters.

New warning signs at Raleigh Beach warn of dangerously strong currents and steep drops on the Neuse River.

This comes after a series of drownings on the Neuse River this summer. At least four people have died in the past three months; they all appear to have occurred in the same area of the Neuse River.

The most recent incident occurred in July — the body of 59-year-old George Warren Williams was recovered after he sank and failed to resurface.

The same stretch of the Neuse River in Raleigh proved treacherous for swimmers this year.

Rescuers say such calls are usually received 1-2 times a year.

“It seems to be something that’s come up in this particular spot this year, and I don’t have a reason why it’s happening,” Josh Creighton said. “I don’t think there’s anything you can do to stop people from going out on the river. It’s summer. It’s hot. People like to get in the water. It’s accessible up and down for miles. So people need to be aware of their swimming skills.”

Swimming Safety Tips

The United States Forest Service recommends:

  • Only swim in designated swimming areas.
  • Always swim with a friend
  • Before you get in the water, know your capabilities
  • Wear a life jacket whenever possible

Authorities also encourage people to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
