One person killed, three injured in home invasion with gunshots fired in University Crossings in south Birmingham

One person was killed and three others injured in a home invasion at a south Birmingham apartment complex.

Shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, officers from the South Precinct were dispatched to the scene of a burglary in progress at the University Crossings Apartments in the 200 block of Third Avenue SW.

Sergeant LaQuitta Wade said police were en route when they received updated information that someone had been shot.

Officers arrived and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds outside the building. Birmingham Fire Department rushed him to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It was learned that another victim was inside the apartment. He was found unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene.

Wade said another man and a woman were shot and fled the apartment. They managed to get away for a while, but were later found by BFRS and also taken to UAB.

The extent of their injuries was not immediately available, Wade said.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the victims were inside the second-floor apartment when someone kicked in the front door and fired shots.

The bullets damaged the apartment below, as well as others, Wade said.

No arrests have been made.

The University Crossings Apartments, formerly known as Montello Gardens, are in the Titusville community and were the scene of a homicide earlier this year.

Monday marked the fifth time since 2022 that the apartments have been the scene of a homicide investigation — including an investigation over spring break 2023, when a teenager was killed in a shooting.

This is the 109th homicide in the city this year. Of those, eight were deemed justified and two others occurred in previous years but the victims died in 2024.

Across Jefferson County, there were 140 homicides, including 109 in Birmingham.
