4-year-old girl drowns in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WTHR) — A 4-year-old girl drowned in a lake in Greenwood Sunday evening and died.

The Greenwood Fire Department was dispatched to the scene of a building in the 800 block of Padre Lane, near East Main Street and Sheek Road, at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 1 in reference to a report of a missing 4-year-old boy.

Authorities said a Greenwood police officer found the girl in a reservoir behind a nearby home.

The policeman jumped into the water to try to save the girl and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Minutes later, Greenwood firefighters took over medical care. Within 10 minutes, the girl was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

13News spoke with Robert Lyons, who has lived on this small lake for over 40 years.

“This just doesn’t normally happen. I just can’t imagine it happening,” Lyons said. “It makes me think about what I do every day, that maybe I can create some safety or protection in the community.”

Initial reports said the girl was in town visiting family and had been missing for an hour. Officers added that multiple family members searched for her before calling 911.

“It is unknown at this time what attracted the child to the water and what exact circumstances led to her entering the body of water,” Greenwood Fire said in a news release. “Our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time.”

While nothing will bring the girl back, Lyons hopes everyone will be more aware of their surroundings to prevent another tragedy by the water.

“Let’s just be more mindful of what we’re doing in that regard. You know, just everything,” Lyons said.
