Many topics were discussed at the recent meeting of the 15th Police District Advisory Council.

Capt. Marques Newsome, commander of the 15th Police District, said gun robberies and homicides in the district are down from last year, while burglaries are up.

One man said he sent the district photos of cars parked on sidewalks, in the middle of back driveways and on corners near fire hydrants.

“Nothing has been done,” he said.

Another man complained about illegal car washes and food vendors.

Newsome said the district is addressing the complaints.

Rich Montanez, deputy commissioner of the city’s streets department, said there are 200 vacancies for speed guards. Montanez said the city is installing LED lighting on the streets. In response to a question about speed cushions, Montanez said 360 cushions are installed per year and the department is seeking funding to install more. He said anyone requesting speed cushions can call 311 or email [email protected]

One man suggested that garbage collectors be equipped with shovels and brooms to clean up the waste that spills out of the bags. A woman complained that garbage collectors often do not put trash cans and recycling buckets back on the sidewalks. One man called for more streets to be paved, including crosses in the box on some corners.
