Chicago:

At least four people were shot dead on a train in the US city of Chicago on Monday, police said. A suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting.

Police said they responded to a 911 call Monday morning and arrived at the Forest Park train station where they found four victims.

“Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, and the fourth was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was later pronounced dead,” the police statement said.

Gun violence is rampant in the United States, a country with more guns than people. Attempts to restrict gun rights have always been met with staunch political resistance.

Chicago police released a description of a suspect in the crime based on surveillance footage; the suspect was later detained and a firearm was found in his possession, the statement said.

“This appears to be an isolated incident and does not pose an immediate threat to the community,” the statement reads.

According to the Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago has one of the largest public transit systems in the United States. On an average weekday, more than 317,000 people ride its trains.

“It’s a terrible situation. It’s definitely something you don’t want to wake up to. It’s a Monday morning holiday,” police officer Christopher Chin told reporters, referring to the Labor Day holiday in the United States.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 378 mass shootings — defined as shootings in which at least four people are killed — in the United States so far this year.

According to the GVA, at least 11,463 people have died due to gun violence.

In June, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a landmark warning declaring gun violence a “public health crisis” and calling for sweeping gun control measures that have so far been blocked by the political opposition.

In recent years, firearms have become the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 19, overtaking motor vehicles, the report said.
