WASHINGTON — Four people were fatally shot on a Chicago-area commuter train early Monday morning. The victims were apparently attacked while they were asleep in their seats, police said Monday afternoon.

According to the Forest Park Police Department, a review of surveillance footage showed the victims appeared to be asleep, were sitting separately and did not resist the attack. The shooting occurred in two separate train cars.

A suspect was arrested and the weapon was recovered. The motive is still unknown.

Forest Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

Also on Labor Day, five people were shot in the afternoon when a suspect fired a gun into the crowd along the New York Caribbean Carnival parade route, according to police. Two people were seriously injured.

In Nashville, Tennessee, six people were injured in a shooting that occurred early Monday morning in the parking lot of a bar.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were more than 380 mass shootings in the United States in 2024. By that definition, a mass shooting is an incident in which four or more victims are shot or killed.
