Ukraine says Russia is attacking Kiev with a wave of drones and missiles as children prepare to return to school

Kyiv, Ukraine — Russia has begun shelling Kiev overnight with drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, the Ukrainian air force said Monday, as children across the country prepared to return to schools after the summer break. Several bursts of explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital early Tuesday morning.

Fragments of captured missiles and drones fell on every district of Kyiv, injuring three people and damaging two kindergartens, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said. City authorities reported multiple fires.

After more than 900 days of warBoth sides show no signs of letting up or coming closer to the negotiating table, with both Russia and Ukraine conducting ambitious ground offensives, with the Ukrainians pushing into Russia’s Kursk region and the Russian army pushing deeper into the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Speaking Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed that his country’s military would “deal with Ukrainian bandits in Kursk” before any negotiations with the neighboring country could take place. Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, and Ukraine launched a counteroffensive on Kursk just months ago as part of a new tactic to draw Russian forces away from the long front lines of the ongoing war.

Both sides regularly attack each other with missiles and long-range drones, sometimes firing more than 100 weapons in the air, indicating they continue to invest in weapons production.

According to the Defense Ministry, Russian air defenses intercepted 158 Ukrainian drones on the night from Saturday to Sunday, including two over Moscow and nine over the surrounding regions.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence said on Sunday that Russian forces had accelerated their advance towards the key Donetsk stronghold of Povkrosk over the past week and were believed to be within six miles of the city. There were no significant changes elsewhere along the 600-mile front line, it said.

Russia fired 35 missiles of various types and 26 Shahed drones at Ukraine on the night from Sunday to Monday, the Ukrainian Air Force said. Nine ballistic missiles, 13 cruise missiles and 20 drones were shot down, it said.

Residents of the capital rushed to bomb shelters.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said emergency services were called to the Holosiiv and Solomiansky districts. One person was reportedly injured by falling debris in the Shevchenkivsky district, Klitschko said.

“There will be an answer to everything. The enemy will feel it,” Andrii Yermak, head of the presidential office, wrote on his Telegram page after the attack.

According to Ukrainian media, an explosion also occurred in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Oleh Synehubov, head of the Kharkiv region, confirmed the early morning attack in Kharkiv’s Industrialny district and said he set fire to a residential building and several others.
